What do the rules mean in Gmail? Rules in Gmail mean that we filter emails based on criteria we specify. When following rules, similarly, emails are filtered according to the rules specified in Filters.

       Rules in Gmail mean that we filter emails based on criteria we specify. When following rules, similarly, emails are filtered according to the rules specified in Filters.
We can create rules in our Gmail account by applying filters. All future emails will be filtered according to the specified criteria.
Messages will be sent to label, star, archive, delete or auto-forward based on the specified filter.
For example, filters can be created to forward selective email. That means checking all future emails. 
Emails matching the filter criteria are automatically forwarded to the specified recipients.
Note: In cases where filters are created for auto-forwarding, only new messages will be affected. A reply to any filter message is only filtered if it matches the same criteria.
Let’s start with the steps.

   Create filter

Here are the steps to create a rule in Gmail using filters on your computer:
1. Open your Gmail account and log in with your Gmail ID and password.
We can directly use the URL: https://mail.google.com/ .
2. On the home page of the Gmail account, click the down arrow on the search bar, as shown in the figure below:
3. A dialog box will appear.
4. Specify the search criteria according to our selection.
5. Specify search criteria and click the Create Filter button. The filter is now created.
6. To search for emails, click the Search button in the lower right corner of the box. 
It will check all emails. 
Emails matching the specified criteria will be displayed.
7. As soon as we click on the “Create Filter” button, a dialog box to specify the search category will appear. 
We can click on any option according to our choice.
8. Click the Create Filter button to save your changes.
9. Similarly, we can create filters by specifying conditions as required.

   Create filter with email
We can also create filters with specific messages in our Gmail inbox.
1. Open your Gmail account and log in with your Gmail ID and password. We can directly use the URL: https://mail.google.com/ .
2. Enter the mailbox, click the check box behind the mailbox, as shown below:
3. It will appear.
4. Now, click on the three dots icon at the top as shown below:
5. A drop down box will appear. Select and click the “Filter messages like this” option as shown below:
6. A filter box will appear.
7. Specify search criteria and click the Create Filter button. 

The filter is now created.
8. As soon as we click on the “Create Filter” button, a dialog box to specify the search category will appear. 
We can click on any option according to our choice.
9. Click the Create Filter button to save your changes.

   Delete filter
Here are the steps to remove filters in Gmail on your computer:
1. Open your Gmail account and log in with your Gmail ID and password.We can directly use the URL: https://mail.google.com/ .
2. On the homepage of our account, click the “Settings” icon in the upper right corner of the screen
3. A drop down box will appear. Click on the “View all settings” option at the top of the drop down box
4. A window will appear. 
Click the Filters and Blocked Addresses option on the tab. 

All created filters appear.
5. Click the small square check box next to the filter we want to delete.
6. Click the “Delete” button in the upper right corner, as shown above.
7. A dialog box will appear to confirm the deletion. 
Click the “OK” button to confirm, as shown in the figure below:
8. The selected filter will be deleted.

   Edit filter
Here are the steps to remove filters in Gmail on your computer:
1. Open your Gmail account and log in with your Gmail ID and password. We can directly use the URL: https://mail.google.com/ .
2. On the home page of our account, click the “Settings” icon in the upper right corner of the screen, as shown below:
3. A drop down box will appear. 
Click the “View all settings” option at the top of the drop-down box as shown below:
4. A window will appear. 
Click the Filters and Blocked Addresses option on the tab. 
All created filters appear. 
5. Click the small square checkbox next to the filter we want to edit.
6. Click the “Edit” option in the upper right corner, as shown in the image above.
7. A filter dialog will appear. 
Specify the changes and click the Continue button as shown below:
8. A dialog for specifying the category will appear. After specifying the changes, click the “Update” button at the bottom, as shown below:
9. Changes will be saved to the specified filter.

   Export/import filters
Here are the steps to export or import filters in Gmail on your computer:
1. Open your Gmail account and log in with your Gmail ID and password.
We can directly use the URL: https://mail.google.com/ .
From the home page of our account, click on the “Settings” icon in the upper right corner of the display, as shown below:
3. A drop down box will appear. Click the “View all settings” option at the top of the drop-down box as shown below:
4. A window will appear. 
Click the Filters and Blocked Addresses option on the tab. 
All created filters appear. 

   Import
1. Click the “Import Filter” option at the bottom of the page, as shown in the image below:
2. Select the file with the filter. The file should be a valid UTF-8 encoded XML file.
3. Click the “Open File” option, as shown below:
4. Click the “Create filter” button.
5. The file import is now complete.

  Export
1. Click the little square checkbox next to the email we want to export. 
2. Click the “Export” button at the bottom of the page, as shown above.
3. It will be downloaded as a .xml file. We can further edit the changes in a text editor if desired.
